Home Learning

Home learning plays a positive role in raising a child's level of attainment. However, we also acknowledge the important role of play and free time in a child's growth and development. While home learning is important, it should not prevent children from taking part in the activities of various out-of-school clubs and of other organisations that play an important part in the lives of our pupils.

Children spend more time at home than at school, and we believe that they develop their interests and skills to the fullest only when parents/carers encourage them to make maximum use of the opportunities available outside school.

We recognise that many of our parents and carers have busy working lives, so we prioritise homework that has the greatest impact on learning, including regular reading, phonics where appropriate, and multiplication tables. Teachers also provide spelling passports as an optional extra for families who would like to further support spelling practice at home. These include a mixture of Common Exception Words (CEW) and High Frequency Words (HFW). In addition, teachers provide a topic‑themed homework menu from which children can choose a range of activities. This is shared with families before each holiday, enabling parents and carers to choose to complete tasks during holiday time rather than in a busy school week. All of this homework is optional, and any work brought into school will be celebrated in class.
