Curriculum
Curriculum Intent
At Newton Longville CE Primary School, our curriculum is designed to help every child flourish — intellectually, socially, morally, emotionally, and spiritually. It is rooted in our Christian vision: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.”
(Colossians 3:23)
We aim to nurture resilient, curious learners who approach life and learning with integrity, compassion, and purpose.
Our curriculum is broad, balanced, and ambitious, ensuring that our theologically rooted Christian vision drives every aspect of school life. We believe that every child is capable of greatness and that learning should be joyful, meaningful, and inclusive.
What Makes Our Curriculum Special
- Flourishing for All
We provide rich opportunities for pupils to grow academically and personally, helping them become confident, articulate, and responsible citizens. - Knowledge and Memory
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so children know more, remember more, and can do more. Learning is designed to build long-term memory and deepen understanding. - Inclusion and Equity
We adapt our curriculum to meet the needs of pupils with SEND and those at early stages of language acquisition. These pupils make progress by developing fluency, independence, and confidence in applying their knowledge and skills. - Spiritual and Moral Development
Through collective worship, RE, and cross-curricular themes, pupils explore big questions, reflect on their values, and develop a sense of justice, dignity, and responsibility. - Preparation for the Future
In an ever-changing world, we equip pupils with the skills, attitudes, and digital literacy needed to thrive in the 21st century.
Curriculum Implementation
At Newton Longville, our curriculum is implemented through a carefully sequenced and thematic approach that ensures depth, coherence, and progression across all subjects and year groups. Each term is structured around engaging topics and key questions that inspire curiosity and connect learning across the curriculum.
From EYFS to Year 6, pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum that includes:
- Core Subjects: English, Maths, and Science are taught daily, with a strong focus on developing fluency, reasoning, and subject-specific vocabulary. Reading and writing are embedded across all subjects, supported by high-quality texts and purposeful outcomes.
- Foundation Subjects: Subjects such as History, Geography, Art, DT, Music, Computing, French, and PE are taught through cross-curricular themes that reflect real-world contexts and pupil interests. For example, Year 2 pupils explore the Great Fire of London through history, art, and writing, while Year 5 pupils study rainforests through geography, persuasive writing, and textile design.
- Spiritual and Moral Development: RE is taught weekly using the Oxford Diocese Scheme of Work, complemented by collective worship and reflection activities. Themes such as justice, compassion, and diversity are explored through stories, discussions, and creative expression.
- Personal Development: PSHE is delivered through the Jigsaw programme, assemblies, and enrichment activities. Pupils learn about relationships, health, safety, and citizenship, preparing them to live well together in a diverse society.
- Enrichment and Experience: Trips, visitors, and immersive experiences are planned to enhance learning and make it memorable. These include visits to museums, places of worship, outdoor learning, and themed days such as Pirate Day or World Book Day.
- Inclusive Practice: Our curriculum is adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including pupils with SEND and those at early stages of language acquisition. Support strategies, scaffolded tasks, and targeted interventions ensure every child can access and succeed in their learning.
Our curriculum is designed to help children know more, remember more, and do more — building knowledge and skills year upon year. It reflects our Christian vision and prepares pupils to thrive academically, socially, and spiritually in a rapidly changing world.
Impact
The impact of our curriculum is seen in the confidence, curiosity, and character of our pupils. We measure success not only by academic outcomes, but by the development of well-rounded individuals who are prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond school.
Our curriculum ensures that:
- Pupils know more, remember more, and can do more. Learning is designed to build long-term memory and deepen understanding across subjects.
- Children make strong progress from their individual starting points, including those with SEND and those new to English.
- Pupils leave us as resilient, reflective learners who can articulate their ideas, solve problems, and work collaboratively.
- They demonstrate spiritual and moral awareness, showing empathy, respect, and responsibility in their relationships and decision-making.
- Our children are ready for the future, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
We regularly assess pupil progress through formative and summative methods, pupil voice, and subject monitoring. The impact of our curriculum is also reflected in the joy and engagement we see in our classrooms, the quality of pupil outcomes, and the pride children take in their learning.
